Mining firm aims to set up its own biofuel plantation in Queensland

Rio Tinto has bought 3000 hectares of grazing land near Townsville in north-east Queensland where it plans to plant trees to accelerate the transition to carbon-neutral fuels.

Some 750,000 pongamia trees will be planted on the property as part of a plan to harvest the seeds and refine their oils into “renewable diesel” to power Rio’s trucks and generators.
