The six member councils – Campaspe, Gannawarra, Loddon, Mildura, Moira and Swan Hill – were represented by MRGC Chair and Goonawarra Council Mayor Ross Stanton, as well as mayors and chief executives.

The group spoke with Water Minister Tanya Plibersek, who raised concerns about the government’s water purchase program and its impact on farmers, food prices and the sustainability of irrigation.

“The scattershot bidding and open tendering for water purchases from our irrigation districts, without any planning, will result in higher input costs,” said Councillor Stanton.

MRCG also spoke with Energy Minister Chris Bowen, who outlined the benefits of investing in renewable energy for the region’s manufacturing base.

“With our location, excellent solar and wind resources and new investment in transmission lines, northern Victoria can play a significant role and really benefit from the energy transition,” Councillor Stanton said.

Ministers also raised investment in housing and infrastructure, which MRGC said would encourage people to move to northern Victoria.
