The art collections of the two colourful Australians will be auctioned off in Sydney and Melbourne on Tuesday, with buyers being offered works ranging from contemporary Chinese painting and German expressionism to a silver throne and pop art.

The late iconoclastic art dealer Ray Hughes delighted in bringing a thrill to Sydney’s weekend galleries. An encounter with a Ghanaian coffin carved in the shape of a crab, or the latest subversive art Hughes unleashed during long lunches with artists in Beijing cafes, was always on the cards.
