Macquarie Point District Plan | Tasmanian Premier

September 18, 2024

Jeremy Rockliff, Prime Minister

Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government,

The Macquarie Point district has reached an important milestone: the Australian Government has accepted the Tasmanian Government’s proposed subdivision plan.

The Tasmanian Government has also submitted part of the plan for the precinct’s Stage 1 multi-purpose stadium to the Tasmanian Planning Commission.

The acceptance of the development plan by the Australian Government is a milestone in the funding agreement between the State and Federal Governments.
The Tasmanian Government has delivered on its commitments to include housing, transport options, stakeholder engagement and waterfront redevelopment in the Macquarie Point Development Plan.

The multi-purpose stadium is part of the first stage of the implementation of the Macquarie Point masterplan.

Following the introduction of the spatial development plan, work is underway to create a master plan aimed at the reconstruction and urban renewal of the district.
A key priority of the partnership between the Australian and Tasmanian Governments will be the development of a housing masterplan, which will inform the development of residential areas and the public coastal zone.

We will continue to work together to make the potential of Macquarie Point a reality in Tasmania.

Quotes attributed to Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff:
“The Macquarie Point redevelopment provides a unique opportunity to deliver something truly special for the people of Tasmania.
“The multi-purpose stadium has been submitted to the evaluation process for a project of national importance, which allows for its independent assessment.
“Through the remediation and on-site works, this project will be a catalyst for the redevelopment and urban renewal of Macquarie Point, transforming it into a hub of economic activity, showcasing world-class sport, arts and events.
“This groundbreaking project will enable Tasmania to realise the AFL dream it has nurtured for decades, while also generating hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity during construction and tens of millions of dollars each year thereafter.
“We will continue to work with the Australian Government on this project, which will stimulate the economy and create new jobs.”

Quotes attributed to Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King:
“This is the first step in our federation funding agreement to collectively develop the Macquarie Point precinct.
Much more needs to be done to ensure that the precinct can not only provide new economic opportunities, but also make Hobart a more vibrant place.
“I look forward to the Tasmanian Government’s stakeholder report in the coming months to understand how local views shape more detailed planning processes.”
