Stoney Creek Plantation residents face severe flooding again, six years after Florence struck

BELVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Multiple homes in Brunswick County were flooded as heavy rainfall brought heavy rain to the Cape Fear on Monday.

One of the affected housing estates is Stoney Creek Plantation in Belville, and for some residents the storm was a breaking point.

Many residents weathered the storm, but some homes began to flood on Monday, with water quickly reaching depths of several feet.

On Monday, the Town Creek area received 10 to 16 inches of rain.

In 2018, some residents also suffered from flooding caused by Hurricane Florence.

While flooding this year has not been as severe in the area as it was in Florence, some residents, like Kenna Stacks, said they are reluctant to rebuild because they fear their homes will flood again.

“Oh, we’re not going back,” Stacks said. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to sleep soundly again knowing that I have two kids and that there could be flooding at any moment, especially with the hurricanes and it’s crazy that it’s also the anniversary of Florence, so it’s like, uh-uh, I don’t trust that.”

Chandler Hancock lived at Stoney Creek Plantation during Hurricane Florence, but later moved to Jacksonville.

He arrived on Tuesday to help his mother, who still lives in the area.

He said he was happy to see so many people helping each other in times of need.

“Really, it’s just the community coming together and using, you know, everyone’s strength to try and just do what’s best for everything that we’re going through as a whole,” Hancock said. “I mean, if we can help, if anyone needs help, I’m more than available to help, just make sure that everyone is good and doing well and, you know, getting what they need.”

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Brunswick County, Southport (over 19 inches) and Bolivia (nearly 18 inches).
