Survivors Invited to National Abuse in Care Apology

With two months to go before the national apology to victims of care abuse, there is an opportunity to express your interest in taking part in the event.

“The Prime Minister will make a national apology in Parliament on Tuesday 12 November. This will be a very important day for survivors, their families, whānau and support networks.

“As a country, we will formally recognise the enormous harm and neglect of state and religious institutions that has been committed in New Zealand over decades,” says Chief Minister for Coordination Erica Stanford.

“The government’s priority is to ensure that as many survivors as possible can attend the apology event.”

Due to limited space available in Parliament, the public apology will be broadcast live to the Due Drop Events Centre in Auckland, Shed 6 in Wellington and Christchurch Town Hall.

Survivors of abuse who are in care, and one support person, can register their interest in attending a parliamentary session or event closest to where they live.

“Travel expenses to all apology events will be covered, including one night’s lodging for those traveling from outside the city where the event is taking place. Meals will also be covered.

“Travel assistance will be provided in the form of airfare, petrol vouchers, gift cards, and train and bus tickets. For those who would prefer to use their own transport, costs will be reimbursed,” Ms Stanford said.

“On November 12, we will also set out more detail about our response to the final report of the Royal Commission. As a government, we are committed to responding with the respect and dignity it deserves.”
