Brunswick plans non-partisan election primer

The Brunswick Area Interfaith Council (BAIC) will host a panel of local election officials and experts to educate the community about our election system.

The nonpartisan and secular event, titled “Election Basics 101,” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, at the Pilgrim House, 9 Cleaveland St. in Brunswick, and is open to all Brunswick area residents.

“We will convene this panel of experts to help each of us refresh our basic civics,” said the Rev. Michael Cartwright, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and vice president of BAIC. “By learning how our election system works, we hope to build confidence in our elections and inspire all of us to vote in November.”

Panelist Darci Wheeler, Bath City Clerk and Registrar of Voters, said that “what I wanted to emphasize at the event is that it’s our community members who make the decisions on Election Day — elections are a kind of neighborhood serving neighbor.”

In addition to Wheeler, panelists included Pastor Kharma Amos of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick, a history teacher from Morse High School and a representative from Maine Youth Votes and the League of Women Voters.

Participants will also have the opportunity to register to vote.
