Fly-By-Night Dance Theater to Have Residency at HWS

In September, the Department of Dance and Movement Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges will welcome New York City’s Fly-By-Night Dance Theater for a four-day teaching and performance residency. The residency, led by Artistic Director Julie Ludwick, will feature three master classes open to the campus community and will culminate in a performance of the company’s latest work, Where should I send my joy?on Saturday, September 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Deming Dance Theatre.

Fly-By-Night Dance Theater, known for its expressive aerial dance, has been pushing boundaries since its founding in 1999. The company has hosted nine New York City aerial dance festivals and numerous residencies, emphasizing diversity through scholarships for the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Professor Cynthia Williams, who invited Ludwick, inspired by her choreography, praised the balance between artistic depth and aerial spectacle of Fly-By-Night. The distinguished work of the team, Where should I send my joy?is a moving exploration of joy in the face of loss, inspired by Ludwick’s terminally ill sister’s plea for moments of joy. The performance will feature three performers using trapezes and ropes.

The residency will also feature Skinner Releasing Technique and Somatic Low-Flying Trapeze workshops. Tickets for the performance will be available at the Gearan Center box office on the day of the event.
