Ashley Paul Griffith: Evil care home paedophile to face fate after admitting more than 300 sickening crimes, including 28 child rapes

A childcare worker who admitted to hundreds of sex offences against young girls is to be sentenced after a prosecutor said the victims’ families should not be kept waiting.

Ashley Paul Griffith, 46, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane District Court on September 2 to more than 300 child sex offences, including 28 rape charges, as well as continuous sexual exploitation and making child abuse material.

He admitted committing offences against multiple children while working in Brisbane daycares between January 2003 and August 2022.

Griffith’s case was moved to Monday to set a sentencing date, which is likely to happen in two days because of the large number of family members who may read victim impact statements in court.

Defence barrister Sarah Cartledge told Judge Leanne Clare she was concerned a court-ordered psychiatric report on Griffith might not be ready in time for a potential sentencing in November.

“The psychiatrist has a lot of information to give and the report itself will be extensive,” Ms Cartledge said.

“It’s not an easy task. It’s a serious matter. Psychiatric reports take a long time, and it’s a complex matter.”

Ms Cartledge said Griffith had pleaded guilty and was in custody so the defence had no reason to withhold sentencing until January 2025.

District Attorney Stephanie Gallagher said she wants to wrap up the criminal case before the end of the year.

“There are 65 victims and 65 families who are willing to hear the verdict. November still gives us plenty of time. There is no indication that the report will not be ready,” she said.

Mr Justice Clare on Monday set Griffith’s sentencing date for November 28 and 29 and adjourned the case.

Griffith was arrested in August 2022 by the Australian Federal Police and originally charged with more than 1,000 offences against 91 young girls, but hundreds of charges were later dropped.

In September, he admitted 190 counts of indecently treating children under the age of 12 while in care, 67 counts of making indecent photographs and videos of children and 15 counts of repeatedly sexually abusing a child.
