HADESTOWN will premiere in Melbourne next year

Hadestown, which has been seen by three million people, has been viewed by over 350 million people and has been loved by fans around the world, has been critically acclaimed in the West End and on Broadway. Hadestown, a musical by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, will premiere in Melbourne at Her Majesty’s Theatre in May 2025.

Hadestown broke box office records at the Theatre Royal Sydney when it went on sale for the Sydney season earlier this year, and Melbourne audiences are expected to be just as enthusiastic about buying tickets for the iconic musical.

“Melbourne audiences embrace musicals like no other city, and musicals in turn enjoy performing here because of the enthusiastic reception and support they receive. Hadestown will be no exception. Creator and writer Anaïs Mitchell is incredibly talented and her musical is magical, bold, exciting and full of love and promise,” said Suzanne Jones of JONES Theatrical Group.

Hadestown, presented by Opera Australia and JONES Theatrical Group, won eight Tony Awards upon its Broadway premiere in 2019, including Best Score and Best Direction, and is still playing to packed houses five years later.

Originally an independent theatre project by Anaïs Mitchell, with her artistic collaborator Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown has evolved into a genre-bending musical that fuses modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine the sprawling ancient tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. The hit musical also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

Following two intertwining love stories—the young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and King Hades and his wife Persephone—Hadestown invites viewers on a hellish journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s seductive melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.

Featuring an energetic ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, Hadestown is a deeply moving and hopeful theatre experience that encourages the audience to imagine what the world could be like.

The Broadway creative team includes Tony Award winner Rachel Hauck (set design), four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Krass (costume design), two-time Tony Award winner Bradley King (lighting design), Tony Award winners Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz (sound design), Obie Award® winner and Chita Rivera Award® winner David Neumann (choreography), Liam Robinson (musical direction and vocal arrangements), Tony Award winners Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose (arrangements and orchestrations), Ken Cerniglia (dramaturgy) and Whitley Theatrical (casting).
