Rutgers Cancer Institute names new chief of neurosurgical oncology


NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Dr. Jonathan H. Sherman, a neurosurgical oncologist, has been named chief of Neurosurgery Oncology at Rutgers Cancer Institute, officials announced Wednesday. Dr. Sherman will also serve as a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) and join the medical staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH), a RWJBarnabas Health affiliate.

Dr. Sherman, an expert in treating brain and spine tumors, brings decades of experience in clinical care and research. “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Sherman to Rutgers Cancer Institute and RWJBarnabas Health,” said Steven K. Libutti, MD, director of Rutgers Cancer Institute and senior vice president of oncology services at RWJBarnabas Health. “He brings new help and hope to patients battling these complex diagnoses.”

In addition to treating patients, Dr. Sherman will lead efforts to expand clinical trials and research initiatives in New Jersey. “I look forward to working together to discover innovative ways to improve patient outcomes through clinical research,” said Dr. Sherman.

Dr. Sherman previously served as Director of Neurosurgical Oncology at West Virginia University and has published over 130 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

  • Dorchester Washington Street Homicide Victim Identified

    BOSTON — Authorities have identified one of the victims in a fatal shooting that occurred Monday on Washington Street in Dorchester.

    At approximately 12:55 p.m., District C-11 officers responded to a report of two people shot at 184 Washington Street. Upon arrival, police found two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds. Both individuals were transported to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries, according to officers.

    One of the victims, identified as 20-year-old Elijah Ricardo Clunie of Dorchester, was pronounced dead at a hospital. The other victim, who is expected to survive, has not been publicly identified.

    The Boston Police Department Homicide Division continues to investigate the shooting. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Department of Homicide at 617-343-4470.

  • Rockaway man charged with cocaine trafficking

    ROCKAWAY, New Jersey – A Rockaway man has been arrested on multiple charges related to the distribution of drugs and firearms, officials said Wednesday. Santiago J. Escobar, 32, of Rockaway Borough, was arrested after an investigation revealed he was involved in the distribution of cocaine and firearms in the area.

    According to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation lasted from April 24, 2024, to August 21, 2024. During that time period, Escobar allegedly distributed more than five ounces of cocaine, a Taurus handgun, and hollow-point bullets. On September 3, law enforcement seized 100 grams of cocaine, several pounds of marijuana, more than $1,000 in alleged drug proceeds, and distribution materials, including scales and baggies.

    Escobar faces multiple charges, including possession with intent to distribute more than five ounces of cocaine, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, illegal possession of a handgun and illegal sale of hollow-point bullets. “Our successful efforts to combat drug distribution are reflected in this arrest,” said Acting Morris County Prosecutor Bradford Seabury.

    Escobar also faces multiple charges of possession and distribution of cocaine, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, and money laundering. Authorities have not announced a date for Escobar’s court appearance.
