Cambodia sets sights on direct flights to Melbourne to boost trade, education ties with Australia

Cambodia is considering launching direct flights to Melbourne as part of a wider push to strengthen ties with Australia by expanding partnerships across trade, education and tourism, including potential university collaborations and investment opportunities.
During a key business summit in Sydney last week, Cheunboran Chanborey, Cambodia’s ambassador to Australia AND New Zealandtold This Week in Asia that he hopes to establish direct flights between Cambodia and Melbourne’s Avalon Airport. The initiative is in line with the opening of a new international airport in Siem Reap and the expected opening of Techo International Airport near Phnom Penh in 2025.

The Southeast Asian country’s interest in Avalon is linked to its growing relationship with Geelong, Victoria’s second-largest city after Melbourne. The connection could provide Cambodian students with new university education opportunities and tourism prospects, Chanborey said on the sidelines of the annual Australia-Asean Business Forum.

Geelong is the gateway to the popular tourist attraction Great Ocean Road, while Siem Reap is the tourist hub of Cambodia, he added.

“The bilateral relationship (between Cambodia and Australia) has become stronger over the years,” Chanborey said, adding that Australia is home to the third-largest Cambodian diaspora in the world.
